Smallest Tile Floor Ever?

Yea! I have had this post ready all week, but the internet hasn't been cooperative at all this week. I have new progress to report on the bathroom - yea again! With the holiday, exams coming up at school for me, and the winter weather, I didn't think we'd get much done this past weekend. I was proven wrong, though, and am quite happy with where we are on the bathroom.

Chad spent Saturday and a little of Sunday trimming out the interiors of the closet doors in the bathroom. We figure the inside can be simple and not necessarily to period, so we used stock casing from Home Depot. It's very simple and pretty small, but for the inside it works well. I caulked the seams and filled the nail holes when he was finished.

The outside will be a little more challenging and time consuming since we want to match the door casings to the rest of the upstairs. We will have to buy 3/4 inch pine or poplar and rout the edges with a round-over bit for the sides, plus make plinth blocks for the bottom. Then, we'll have to find some crown or chair rail for the top of each casing. We think we know which pieces-parts we need, but it'll be a process. We think we'll also be making our own baseboard to match closely what's already in there.

We had a Christmas party yesterday afternoon, and when we got back I thought we were done for the day. But around 8:00 Chad asked if I wanted to keep working in the bathroom, specifically tiling the bathroom floor. This would seem like a big undertaking for 8:00 on a Sunday night, but this is the smallest tile floor I've ever seen. See, much of the bathroom will be hardwood floors, except for the small area in front of the shower and toilet that will be tiled. It is literally 5 feet by 2 3/4 feet.

The Tile Shop sold us 15 square tiles - exactly enough to cover the space. When Chad snapped the first tile in half the wrong way, we thought we were doomed. But, we kept going with no mistakes. Chad did the cutting and I did the mortar and laying. We got to the final tile around the water line, and thankfully we were able to salvage pieces of the first snapped piece to wrap around it.
I think it looks great, but now I'm ready to keep tiling. Things are really starting to come together, and now I'm getting antsy. We don't have any plans for the upcoming weekend and we are about ready for Christmas, so we may attempt to sand and refinish the wood floors in the bathroom and two other rooms in the house. Seems like a crazy and big undertaking for the weekend before Christmas, but we may give it a shot.

Good for you! This time of year can be so busy, the fact that you had time for all of this is great. I hear ya on the small tile area, my bathrooms are 5X5 and 5X6, including the tub and shower!

Keep up the good work & have a Merry Christmas!
